Western – ROC Year Table (1883–2031)

WesternROCGanzhiZodiacQing / Japanese era

The table scrolls to the current year automatically. Years before 1912 are shown as "Before ROC N".

How the ROC Calendar Works

The conversion

The ROC calendar counts years from the founding of the Republic of China in 1912, which is ROC year 1. Everything else is identical to the Western calendar — the months and days never change, because the ROC calendar is the Gregorian calendar with a different starting point for the year count. So Western 2026 = ROC 115, and Western year = ROC year + 1911.

Where you will see it

ROC years appear on almost every official document issued in Taiwan: ARC and residence permits, national ID cards, driver's licences, household registration (戶籍謄本), birth and marriage certificates, tax filings, bank forms, rental contracts and product expiry dates. A date printed as 115/07/29 or 115.7.29 means 29 July 2026 — not 2015.

Dates before 1912

There is no "ROC year 0". Years before 1912 count backwards as "Before ROC N" (民國前 N 年), where N = 1912 − Western year. Western 1911 is Before ROC 1, and 1900 is Before ROC 12. Tick the checkbox above to convert this range — useful for old household registration records.

Ganzhi and the zodiac

The sexagenary cycle (干支, ganzhi) pairs one of ten Heavenly Stems with one of twelve Earthly Branches, repeating every 60 years. This page switches the ganzhi year on 1 January. Traditionally the zodiac animal actually changes at Lunar New Year, so for the correct traditional value see the lunar calendar converter.

Qing and Japanese era names

The table also lists the Qing dynasty Guangxu (1875–1908) and Xuantong (1909–1911) eras, and the Meiji, Taishō and Shōwa eras from Taiwan's period under Japanese rule (1895–1945). These appear on pre-war land deeds and household records. Years where an era changed mid-year are shown approximately.

Writing dates on official forms

Formal Taiwanese documents write the year digit by digit in Chinese characters. ROC 115/7/29 is written 中華民國一一五年七月二十九日 — note that the year reads "one one five", not "one hundred and fifteen". The red box above generates this for you and can be copied directly onto a form.

Conversions have been checked against the Ministry of the Interior's official ROC–Western comparison table. This is an unofficial tool provided for reference; for legal purposes rely on the issuing authority.
