* Final dates are set by Taiwan's Directorate-General of Personnel Administration in its official calendar. A holiday falling on a Saturday is compensated on the preceding working day; one falling on a Sunday is compensated on the following working day. Lunar New Year is compensated after the whole block. Since late 2025 there are no make-up work Saturdays.

What Changed in 2025

An amendment to the Act on Commemorative Days and Holidays added or restored several days off: Little New Year's Eve, Teachers' Day (28 September, Confucius' birthday), Retrocession Day (25 October) and Constitution Day (25 December). Labor Day (1 May) also became a nationwide holiday rather than one only for workers covered by the Labor Standards Act. If you are working from an older list of Taiwanese holidays, it is now out of date.

Make-up Holidays and Make-up Work Days

When a fixed-date holiday lands on a Saturday or Sunday, a weekday is given off in compensation. Taiwan used to claw those days back by making people work an extra Saturday to create longer breaks; that practice was abolished in late 2025, which is why the make-up work day count here is zero.

Lunar Holidays

Lunar New Year, Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival follow the lunar calendar, so their Western dates move every year. Those dates are computed with the same engine behind the lunar calendar converter. Lunar New Year is by far the longest break — most businesses close for the better part of a week, and transport and accommodation book out well in advance.

Planning Around Them

Government offices, banks and post offices close on public holidays. Convenience stores, restaurants and public transport generally keep running, though Lunar New Year is the exception: many small businesses shut for several days, and some do not reopen until after the fifth day of the new lunar year.

Next year's calendar is normally published by the end of June the year before.
