About the Lunar Calendar

What it is

The Chinese lunar calendar (農曆) is lunisolar: months follow the phases of the moon, while the year is kept aligned with the seasons. A lunar month is 29 or 30 days long, so twelve of them come to about 354 days — roughly 11 days short of a solar year.

Why leap months exist

To stop the calendar drifting through the seasons, an extra month is inserted roughly every two to three years, giving that year thirteen months. A leap month has no name of its own: it repeats the preceding month, so a leap sixth month follows the ordinary sixth month. 2025 had a leap sixth month. The zodiac changes at Lunar New Year

Your zodiac animal is set by the lunar year, which begins at Lunar New Year (somewhere between 21 January and 20 February), not on 1 January. If you were born in January or early February, your zodiac sign is usually the previous year's animal — a common source of confusion. This page uses the correct lunar boundary; the year converter switches ganzhi on 1 January instead, which suits document work.

Finding your lunar birthday

Many families in Taiwan celebrate birthdays by the lunar date, which lands on a different solar date each year. Use "Lunar → Solar" above with your lunar birth month and day to find when it falls in any given year.

Coverage and precision

Conversions use standard astronomical tables covering 1900–2100, including every leap month and long/short month. The 24 solar terms (節氣) and their exact times are not included, so this tool is not suitable for date selection (擇日) or hour-level astrology.
