Filling In ROC Dates on Taiwan Bank Forms

When a Taiwan bank form asks for today's date, write it in ROC years: subtract 1911 from the Western year. In 2026, today's date is written starting with 115, not 2026.

The conversion, in reverse

Most of this site converts ROC dates you're reading into Western dates. Filling in a form runs the formula the other way: take the current Western year and subtract 1911 to get the ROC year to write down.

FormulaROC year = Western year − 1911
Example2026 − 1911 = 115 → write 115 in the year box
Full date22 September 2026 → 115年09月22日 or 115/09/22

The ROC year converter gives you today's ROC date and the formal written form at a glance, which is useful to have open while filling in paperwork.

Why the boxes are three digits, not four

Many printed Taiwanese bank and insurance forms have small pre-ruled boxes for the date, sized for a three-digit ROC year rather than a four-digit Western one. If you write "2026" into a box meant for three digits, it either won't fit or will visibly break the form's layout — a fast signal to counter staff that something is off, even before they read the number.

Where you'll fill in a ROC date at a bank

Account opening forms, signature cards, remittance instructions, loan applications and insurance policy applications all typically carry a "date" field near the signature line, and it's almost always expected in ROC format on a Taiwan-issued form. Your date of birth elsewhere on the same form may also be requested in ROC years — read the label (出生日期 for date of birth, 填表日期 or 日期 for the form-filling date) rather than assuming.

Common mistakes at the counter

The two errors that come up most: writing the full Western year where a ROC year is expected, and writing the ROC year but forgetting to adjust it when the calendar has just rolled over into a new ROC year around 1 January. Since the ROC and Gregorian new years fall on the same date, the ROC year changes exactly when the Western year does — there's no lag to account for.

If you're unsure which format a specific box wants, ask the teller. It's a common enough question that staff are used to it, especially at counters that serve foreign residents.

Digital banking

Online banking and mobile apps from Taiwanese banks frequently default to displaying dates in ROC format for statements, transaction history and maturity dates, though many let you switch to the Western calendar in the app's settings if you prefer.

Frequently asked questions

What do I write for today's date on a Taiwan bank form?

Write it as a ROC date: subtract 1911 from the current Western year. For a form filled in during 2026, write 115 in the year box, then the month and day as usual.

Why does the form have three small boxes for the year instead of four?

Because ROC years are currently three digits (2026 is ROC 115), Taiwanese paper forms are commonly printed with three-digit year boxes rather than the four digits a Western year needs. Writing a four-digit Western year will usually not fit and will look wrong to the person processing it.

Does my date of birth on a bank form need to be in ROC format too?

Usually yes for Taiwan-issued forms aimed at residents, but check the field label — some forms aimed at foreign customers accept or expect a Western year, and will say so. When in doubt, ask the counter staff which format they want.

I wrote the Western year by mistake. Is that a problem?

Ask the bank staff before submitting. Some staff will simply correct it, others may ask you to redo the field, since a bank form is a record they rely on being accurate. It's far easier to fix before signing than after.

Do digital banking apps also use ROC dates?

Many Taiwanese bank apps and online banking portals display transaction and statement dates in ROC format by default, sometimes with an option to switch to the Western calendar in settings. Check your app's date settings if the numbers look unfamiliar.
